Library branches closest to the Hilltop, which is about 27% Black and seen as the center of Tacoma’s Black community, were closed in 2011. Tacoma has since overall disinvested in library services for less affluent and more diverse communities. The Hilltop Library Planning Committee is committed to getting library services returned to Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood. A public library is the beating heart of its community, where people of all ages, socioeconomic statuses, schooling, and languages have equal access to unfettered information, entertainment, and education. Public libraries are also critical to democracy. They nurture an informed constituency, encourage civic activism, and provide meeting rooms. They even supply the local community voter registration forms, voter pamphlets, and often host ballot drop boxes. We will not give up until a library is once again open on the Hilltop!
